Western Wake Partnership for Wastewater Infrastructure

Six Wake County local governments worked together from May 2002 to July 2004 to evaluate options for providing long-term wastewater management services for western Wake County. As a result of the evaluation, four local governments have elected to proceed with the construction of regional wastewater management facilities to serve the needs of western Wake County to the year 2030. These “partners” include the towns of Apex, Cary, Holly Springs, and Morrisville.

Cary voters approved bonds for the wastewater facilities and for open space preservation in May 2005.

Project Details

Apex, Cary and Morrisville will jointly build sewer lines and pump stations to convey wastewater to a new water reclamation facility along with discharge facilities to convey the highly treated effluent to the Cape Fear River below Buckhorn Dam. Holly Springs is participating only in the effluent conveyance facilities.

The period of time required to study, locate, design, permit, and construct the new facilities will span from 2004 to 2011 and include several points during which the partners must meet specific public information and notification requirements.

To this end, the partners have jointly established www.westernwakepartners.org to serve as the official and primary communications vehicle for the project.

While many of the elements of the project will be handled jointly, there are some issues, including developing and filing some required reports, that must be handled individually by each partner. While www.westernwakepartners.org will offer links to such items, documents and information specific to a partner will be hosted on that partner’s Web site.
